Let Strider-Fest Begin!

So as of September 27th The Darkest Surrender by Gena Showalter was released into stores. This will be the 12th story in the Lords of the Underworld series. And this novel revolves around Strider the keeper of the Demon High Lord of Defeat. I just picked up the novel today and have been itching g to crack open the binding. (As I previously stated I am re-reading and reviewing each of her previous novels in this series.) I am so excited and can't wait to get to know the immortal warrior Strider and see who finally can challenge his heart. (And recently announced the next book will be the long awaited Paris' story!!!!) But for now let me leave you with the summary from Ms. Showalter's artfully crafted 12th Lords story:

So the summary of this book does not do this book nor the series justice! This book is a perfectly balanced juggling act of everything I want in a novel history/mythology, drama, romance, intrigue and a cliffhanger ending that leaves you reaching for the next novel in the series. Ashlyn (love the name) is a little wimpy for my tastes at first and yes she can hear past conversations which is pretty cool but whats with the constant need to be taken care of (yuck). But she does come into her own later in the novel and did manage to live up to Gena's strong woman in charge MO. Now Maddox is the story of violence ( no really he is violence). He is one of 12 Lords and here's that back story:

"Long ago, twelve immortals warriors – each more dangerously seductive than the last -- stole and opened Pandora’s box, unleashing the evil from within. Now they carry that evil within themselves. Violence, Pain, Death, Disease, Disaster, Misery, Doubt, Promiscuity, Defeat, Lies, Secrets, and Wrath. When a powerful enemy returns, they will travel the world in search of a sacred relic of the gods – one that threatens to destroy them all. "

And I know this may sound confusing but the novels do a wonderful job of setting you up with the storyline of the Lords. And if your a mythology junkie like myself this is the series you've been waiting for. What a fun and fresh new look into the story of Pandora's box and I cannot wait to read the whole series. Caution: These books are extremely addicting I read the first and bought the rest within a week of reading the first! I'm on book 2 now! (:

Oh My Goodness it's been awhile. However, I finally have internet back again. (I know what your thinking but welcome back to the 21st century for me haha!) But I'm kicking off the month of September big time with the new release of Gena Showalter's The Darkest Surrender (biting my nails until the 27th as we speak). Hands down!!! My FAVORITE of the Goddess Summoning Series. P.C. Cast delivers a stunning mythical romance following some of the guidelines to the myth of Persephone and Hades (but also throwing some of that myth to the wind). Lina the main character and heroine is so relate-able to my life (and not just because we're both bakers). She is a strong, resilient career driven woman not able to slow her 100 mile per hour life for a little romance. That is until she finds herself head over heels for the Underworld and it's enchanting ruler. And speaking of that ruler; Hades embodies female fantasy i.e. dark, brooding, handsomely masculine, but most of all he's lost and set apart until he finds that which can complete him! And I love the interwoven myths throughout the story for example Orpheus does make an appearance although not in the hero kind of way! This story definitely had me laughing, wistful, tearful, and overjoyed at times but I guarantee that you will be engrossed completely from cover to cover. This is the best retelling of Persephone's myth I think I've ever read so kudos to P.C. Cast. And since I think if there is even a glimmer of romantic twinkle in your eye YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK; I'm not going to say anymore to spoil this little gem for you!

This is the first in P.C. Casts Goddess Summoning Series! Most of you know of her other series The House Of Night Series which is excellent in my opinion. But these books are aimed more towards Adults. I love Cast's infusion of myth, magic, and romance in all her books. But this book I found fascinating because to me it mirrored my favorite childhood fairytale "The Little Mermaid". I love CC as she transforms from mortal to mermaid to human trapped in medieval Wales to Goddess Of The Sea. She is such a powerful influence on everyone's life she touches whether that be emotionally or physically. And although the book leans more towards romance and myth than inspirational; there is a great message that "All women have a divine power in themselves!" And CC is the very example of this whether she is Mermaid, Mortal or lost in between. But Romance fans fear not because there is plenty of passion pumped into this novel and True Love always conquers all as everyone knows! This is only the beginning and I cannot wait to delve deeper into this series. I have a deep love for Greek and Roman mythology, and if your also a fan or just a true romantic at heart (hey I'll readily admit I am) than this book will have you begging for more Goddess Summonings!

Yay Book Blogger Hop Day! Last week I found some fantastic fellow bloggers, and am ready for more awesome finds this week! I have a great love and respect for all authors! I think anyone who puts themselves out in the public eye is worthy of praise! That being said I do have some favorite authors of my own. I truly adore P. C. Cast novels for her style of writing and ability to combine mythology, paranormal, romance, and suspense into every page of her novels. Charlaine Harris for creating The Sookie Stackhouse series which has led to my favorite TV show True Blood. Classically, I LOVE Jane Austen, her work is truly indescribable to me! And in the historical fiction department I'm obsessed over three wonderful female authors Robin Maxwell, Phillipa Gregory, and Margaret George (my current author of the month). All three lovely ladies take famous women in history and portray them for who they really were whether that be great, foolish, or just plain bad! These are probably my top six at the moment but like I said I appreciate all authors new and old! And I'm sure there is another great storyteller just around the corner waiting to be discovered!

What a mind blowing read! Yes I figured even before starting this book that they would compare "coming out of the coffin" with "coming out of the closet"! But has anyone ever noticed the "God Hates Fangs" at the beginning credits is a direct throwback to the Fred Phelpsian slogan that bashed Gay rights activists. I sure didn't and was amazed at how many other philosophical and historical reference points the producers of True Blood draw upon. This book really brings to light (haha didn't actually mean the pun) some questions the fans of True Blood are dying to have answered! And I always enjoy a book that makes you go "hmmmmmm?" There are so many eye openers in this book that after reading I went and re-read The Sookie Stackhouse Series, then re-watched Season 1 & 2, and then finally re-read this book! And I was honestly startled at how obvious the hidden meanings are once they have been revealed in the book! If your a fan of either True Blood or the Charlaine Harris books I seriously suggest you read True Blood and Philosophy! Not only is it fun to have that "ahh-hah" moment of finally figuring something out but even after reading your left with some things to ponder! And last but not least since this only covers the first two seasons I'm sure will be seeing more in-depth looks into this phenomenal books and show!

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB @ Should Be Reading. This is one of my favorite meme's as I have a love for all things that hold mystery! Unfortunately I've been quite busy at work the past couple of weeks but as I said before I'm back and ready to blog! This week I'm reading Goddess Of The Rose by P.C. Cast. Just about everyone knows Ms. Cast from her House Of Night Series. However; many don't realize she also has written books for a more adult audience as well. I stumbled upon this book after checking out her official website and without too much more rambling let the teasing begin:

This is a hodgepodge of a story; part Beauty and The Beast, part Greek Mythology, and pure fantasy. I'm very intrigued by P.C.'s older series of books they are exceedingly well written as were her House Of Night Series but have a little more realism to me based on my age! Plus anything that combines Greek or Roman Mythology and the modern day is my cup o' tea! but I hope you have a Terrific Tuesday and as always let me know you teasers for the week!

I really wanted to get into this book; the plot is relatable even with the paranormal element, and the author has a spellbinding way of storytelling. Unfortunately the events just played out too slow and the ending was a real let down (at least for me it was)! Also the paranormal element just took a backseat about halfway through the book, it was still in the car but just not as exciting and intriguing as it could have been. Although this book has a great message which is about one person being able to make a difference, I think I anticipated more from the novel. It reminded me of M. Night Shymalan's The Village suspense throughout and then a giant let down at the end! But like I always say "to each their own" and although this book won't be on my favorites any time soon you may find that you enjoy the novel!

What a fantastic look into on of the most honorable man in all of history. Everyone has heard of Richard the Lionheart and the bad King John (which is where our legend of Robin Hood is supposed to have originated) but there was a greater man behind both William Marshall! And Chadwick brings him to life in her two novels The Greatest Knight and The Scarlet Lion. I truly adored William throughout The Greatest Knight and after reading The Scarlet Lion I felt as if he should be the model to which men look up to. His honor, loyalty, and above all love and compassion he shows to ALL throughout both novels surpasses any other man I've ever heard of or about. And yes, I know I am blabbering about William Marshall but it is his promises and loyalties which hold the entire book together. And no, this is not just another prince charming story. This is a rocky road of doing whats right in the face of sooo much wrong. The story was uplifting and will have you practically screaming for William and Isabelle to succeed. Will they at long last? Well I think you should read the book for yourself and find out! The Greatest Knight and The Scarlet Lion are both on my "must reads" list and I seriously suggest this to all who are Historical Fiction buffs!

Author Of The Month: Margaret George

The first week of every month I like to introduce a new outstanding author that I have found. This month I have chosen a woman who truly can capture history in her novels along with scandal, mystery, and myth! So without further ado let me introduce you to Margaret George:

Margaret George is an historian and historical novelist, writing historical biographies. She was born in \Nashville, Tennessee. She lives with her husband in Madison, Wisconsin. She is the author of the bestselling novels The Autobiography of Henry VIII, Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles and The Memoirs of Cleopatra. The latter novel was adapted into a successful TV-movie starring Leonor Varela in the title role, Billy Zane as Mark Anthony and Timothy Dalton as Julius Ceasar. George is currently working on a novel about the life of Queen Elizabeth I during the later years of her reign, in the time of Shakespeare and the discovery of the New World, to be published in 2010. After the publication of her Elizabeth novel, George plans on writing a novel about Boudicca, highlighting Boudicca's conflict with Rome and Nero.

Margaret's novels delve into the lives of some of histories most notable figures. My favorite novel by her would have to be Mary Called Magdalene. I suggest unless your offended by religious reference books to give this one a try first! Although I must admit I was completely captivated by all her novels up to this date. This book made me fall in love all over again with P.C. Cast and the way she writes! This is her first book in the Divine series which introduces us to Parthalon and her world. I love her fusion of mythology and magic she uses to create her Parthalon series. The way she writes is so relatable and intriguing that you don't want to put a single book of hers down. I become so enthralled in her world she creates that it all seems so real to me. And when you put the book down it's really quite sad to have to step back into mundane reality. This series also unlike her House Of Night Series (which don't get me wrong I love!) is more adult and will hit a note with an older audience as the main characters tend to be between their mid 20's through 30. The only thing bad I have to say is I want more .....more of Parthalon and the powerful women who make the books real for me! The suspense is killing me and I have a feeling I will be heading to Barnes & Noble tomorrow to purchase the rest of the set! If by chance you haven't read any of P.C. So sorry for the sudden disappearance! I've been working on a new dessert concept for work and it's been a grueling two weeks! But I'm back and ready to blog my butt off!! But as for the twist this week:

Love, Love, Love this series! My only complaint is I can't get enough, oh, and that all The House Of Night books end with cliffhangers! Which really isn't a complaint considering the fact that it leads me to intrigue and suspense. But to be honest P.C. Cast has done it again! Her books are like a magical symphony you just can't help but sway to! Every note is perfectly balanced! And what really captures you is her characters they're soo real! Which I think a lot of that credit goes to Kristin Cast for keeping the teen drama realistic. I have been pulled into every one of these two ladies books so far and this was no exception. And I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about the House Of Night series but however much people despise the books they keep reading them. And that says something!

This volume particularly caught my attention because it was rooted in Scotland for the most part. And being of Scottish decent I loved the old Folklore, symbolism, and setting. This series is a combination of so much mythology but at the same time there is complete harmony throughout the books. I love the storyline, characters, settings and references and I don't think I really can say much more besides this is a must-read series (in fact most of the Cast books are)! So I will be on pins and needles waiting until the next installment (Awakened) comes to a store shelf near me!

Hopping Through A Galaxy Far, Far Away!

Happy Friday everyone!! I've had a kick butt weekend, one of the best in a while which is why I'm posting up my hop so late. Today I went to Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios and got to meet a crazy amount of celebrities i.e Ray Park (Darth Maul), Billy Dee Williams (Captain Lando Calrissian), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Matthew Wood (General Grievous), and some of the voices behind the "Clone Wars" animated series. And yes, I know I'm a total nerd but I love me some Star Wars. I even got a shirt with a storm trooper eating a mickey mouse ice cream that says "Taste the Dark Side"! Oh the irony! But anyways enough about my crazy awesome day lets get to the blogging! I found a lot of great blogs last week and can't wait to see whats new for this week! Every month I like to take a little time out of reviewing and meme's to post about a special author who impacts not only myself an this blog but also the book/entertainment community. This month I have chosen Charlaine Harris. So without further ado let me give you a little info about this amazing author:

Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over twenty-five years. A native of the Mississippi Delta, she grew up in the middle of a cotton field. Now she lives in southern Arkansas with her husband, her three children, three dogs, and a duck. The duck stays outside. Though her early output consisted largely of ghost stories, by the time she hit college (Rhodes, in Memphis) Charlaine was writing poetry and plays. After holding down some low-level jobs, she had the opportunity to stay home and write, and the resulting two stand-alones were published by Houghton Mifflin. After a child-producing sabbatical, Charlaine latched on to the trend of writing mystery series, and soon had her own traditional books about a Georgia librarian, Aurora Teagarden. Her first Teagarden, REAL MURDERS, garnered an Agatha nomination. Soon Charlaine was looking for another challenge, and the result was the much darker Lily Bard series. Charlaine is the perfect choice this month for my spotlight author! Not only was "Dead In The Family" hitting the bookshelves of stores everywhere this past month along with Season 2 of True Blood, but also Season 3 of True Blood start on the 13th of this month!! I am a huge fan of her "Sookie Stackhouse Series" and a glued-to-the-TV fan of True Blood. I think personally I've read everyone of her novels at least twice just to make sure I didn't miss anything. She has such a way with her character development and settings that it pulls you into the story. And now thanks to HBO I have some amazing (hottt!) images to go by while reading. (If your a fanatic like myself, you know I'm talking about Eric, Bill, Sam, and Jason.) But what I love most about Charlaine' s books is that she takes a fresh perspective on the supernatural. You're never bored or feel jaded because her view on Supes is sooo new and off the beaten path! I personally cannot wait for more Charlaine and more Sookie! A note to the author: please keep the books coming, I cannot get enough!!

I really enjoyed this novel it wasn't an in-depth, make you think kind of book. Yet it has an incredible, make- you -feel good message to put out there. This is the type of book for a younger set but can still be enjoyed by adults. The characters are relatable and the setting is your average town. The fantasy element is what elevates the book from not just being another teen high school story. I really would have liked some more character development and struggle in Griffin but you win some and lose some. All in all I'd say this book was a fun, feel-good quick read. I think that if your just looking for a book to enjoy and smile about this is for you!

Sometimes your just in the mood for a little romance and a lot of surprises and I have to say this book hit the spot! I loved how the author has researched the time period that her character Cam transports back to. Before this book I had little knowledge of Lely' s (the painter in the stories) work or if he was even a real historical figure? However; after being enthralled by the passion and characters of this novel I had to Wikepedia Peter Lely. And yes he was a real artist and many of the factual information on him in the book was correct. And that's what I loved about this book, it surprised me! I was just looking for a romance novel and voila! ....I stumble upon an amazing hit/fic book as well. To break the book down the romance is amazing sometimes a bit graphic so I wouldn't recommend the book to a younger crowd and the history was spellbinding! I love finding a new era and character/ historical figure to dwell on. (And that's what I call my passion). Everything was exquisitely written (the plot, characters and settings) and my favorite part is the little surprise twist at the end which might have you saying, "Oh, how did I forget about that?" My only complaint would have to be I wanted more of the ending but I guess that may remain to be seen!

To begin with I was a little leery at first about reading this book when I got an email about a possible review copy. My biggest worry was that I try not to mix religion and my love of books. but lets just say curiosity got this cat. And it didn't kill me; actually I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't the in your face religious sermon I was expecting but it still portrays a great message in a fun way. I can't tell you how much excitement I got out of searching for hidden meaning in the story. For example the name of the dark prince is Senkrad and if you reverse his name what do you get?......Darknes (Prince of Darkness anyone?) And there are so many more concealed messages throughout the novel. The storyline is enchanting and exciting and doesn't drag on. The setting is very vivid and although you can picture the places in religion they are also just as believable in this fantasy setting. And the characters are magical not just in the way they are written but also in personality. I think if the author was trying to make religion relate-able and fun for all ages he definitely has my attention. And my one wish for this book would be where was it when I was in High School? It has such a great message and teaches right and wrong without trying to stuff it down your throat! Bravo!

I received this book via FSB Associates and was quite interested in the message it portrays. Although the book is a fantasy novel it has roots based in religion which I found fascinating and intriguing. So far I'm very interested in the book and it's hidden messages and hope this novel will become a success story! But enough of my jibber-jabber time for my Teaser Tuesday:

I really like this book so far because it's not in your face religion but has a very subtle under-tone that if you know it's there is very visible. I am so excited to present to everyone a new rising star in the Historical Fiction Romance scene ....Cynthia Roberts. Her first book in her Native American romance series is due out very soon. And she has graced my blog with the pleasure of a guest post to explain a little bit about herself and her up and coming novel Wind Warriors! So without further ado I give you Cynthia:

Hello everyone. Like all of you, I lived and breathed reading romances … it filled many long, lonely evenings when my husband worked nights in law enforcement and I was raising our children Jason and Alyssa (now 31 and 29). It proved my constant companion later when my “Cinderella” marriage of twenty-five years came to an unexpected end. There is a quote I heard once I can’t remember verbatim but goes somewhat like … “There is no greater loss than a love once known.”

I’m a true believer that when tragedy strikes and you’re standing at the edge of a fathomless abyss and all you see is darkness looking back at you, faith lies in knowing one of two things will happen. You can either let fear consume you, roll up into a ball and waste away or, you can take a leap of faith and learn how to soar like an eagle.

I’ve always had a passion for writing from that very moment a Crayola was placed in my hand and throughout my career in marketing, public relations and sales writing creatively came easy. When my marriage ended at the age of 45, life as I knew it was never the same. It was a time of unrest, uncertainty, losing friends and family and financial ruin because I also found myself jobless which continued nearly two years.

Wind Warrior became my salvation. One evening I sat in front of the computer and decided to write instead of read. I loved Cassie Edwards Savage Series and read every one of her books and figured all I could do was fail. Every historical Indian romance I read from that point on was based on a Plains tribe. I wanted to focus on a tribe indigenous to my area and decided to write a series based on the five tribes that make up the Iroquois League of Nations. Their warriors were the fiercest ever known to strike terror in the hearts of early settlers from Pennsylvania to Canada. They were referred to as "People of the Longhouse" because their families lived together in wooden structures upward of 40 feet long. They were an extremely powerful nation that was sadly torn apart by the American Revolution.

It proved my therapy back then but not quite up to par to win the favor of publishers. I received so many rejections I could have wallpapered a small room in my house and almost gave up on my dream. That is, until I realized it just wasn’t my time. I needed to live through and get beyond the pain in my own life before I could transform that experience into the kind of passion and emotion I wanted my readers to feel personally through my writing.

Wind Warrior is book one of five of my Iroquois Series and will officially be released by Tate Publishing June 15th. It is, however, available now for purchase through Tate’s website and it is my heartfelt hope readers will find it as enthralling to read as it was for me to research and bring to life. You can read an excerpt on my website. Book #2 Captive Heart is finished and I’m hoping it will be released the end of this year.

Now that the writer in me has been unleashed … look out world! If I can leave my beautiful five grandchildren any legacy, it will be the strength, conviction and passion put into every story I bring to life. This is her volume in her fabulous Sookie Stackhouse Series. And in case you've been living on Mars it is also the series that sprouted the phenomenal TrueBlood TV show on HBO (more on that in a minute). I am bursting at the seams to finish this book because I am in love with all things Sookie! And I know I've begun to ramble again so I'll just get to my teaser this week:

That's right I finally got the book I've been pining over for the past 6 months! And let me tell you it was......phenomenal, outstanding, and exactly what I had hoped for. As soon as I cracked open the binding a huge, cheesy grin broke out onto my face. That is how excited I was to read this novel. Robin does it again putting me right into the time period and setting and the poetry O' the poetry. The verses inserted by Maxwell of Dante's work sing to the soul, and shake love and passion to your core! And thats what this book is about love conquering all! I mean we all know the story of Romeo and Juliet but this novel adds a depth to the story and retells the legend through the lovers. After reading I fell like I have a deeper understanding of their connection, the family feud (haha funny game show), betrayal, overcoming-all-obstacle love. And yes at the end of the novel even though I know whats supposed to happen I stilled bawled my eyes out like a baby! But all laughs at my expense aside this book was stunning, beautifully written, heart-wrenching and I could go on and on. I don't want to give away too much because I highly recommend you read this one! In short Robin Maxwell you amaze me and I think O' Juliet ranks up there with your Signora da Vinci!

Picking up right where Elphame's Choice left off Brighid starts out on her quest to save herself, her soulmate, and the world of Partholon as we know it. And what a quest it is! Ms. Cast weaves her web again and I am happy to become prey to this rich vivid web of a world. The characters have more meaning to me now like they've become (through the first book) a close-knit personal group of friends. And I love that this book is about Brighid because after Lochlan (Elphame's hottie mate from the first book) she was my favorite character. I loved her strength and sarcasm in the first novel and was astounded by her compassion, and endurance in the second. And I don't think I have to tell you but I do greatly enjoy a strong woman novel (it's the feminist in me). I really believe that Ms. Cast has hit a grand slam with this series and I hope she continues to develop it (as she did her House Of Night Series) I know I'm a pins and needles after that cliff-hanger ending shes left the readers on the last few pages of the novel! And I am certainly craving more Partholon and more P. C. Cast!!!

Every month I like to take a little time in between reviews and meme's to recognize some of the great authors who make reading such a joyous experience for me! This month I have chosen ( haha no pun intended) P.C. Cast the author of The House of Night series (of which I am obsessed) and her new Partholon Series. But before I begin pouring on the praise for this lovely lady let me give you her bio:

P.C. Cast was born in the Midwest, and grew up being shuttled back-and-forth between Illinois and Oklahoma, which is where she fell in love with Quarter horses and mythology (at about the same time). After high school she joined the United States Air Force and began public speaking and writing. After her tour of the USAF, she taught high school for 15 years before retiring to write full time. Ms. Cast is a New York Times Best-Selling Author. Her novels have been awarded the prestigious: Oklahoma Book Award, YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award, the prism, Holt Medallion, Daphne du Maurier, Booksellers Best, and the Laurel Wreath. P.C. Cast makes my imagination soar, she takes her novels to great lengths. I swear you can use all five senses as you read I can see it, feel their emotions, taste triumph and defeat, smell the wide open plains or hidden groves, and hear the distinctive voice of each and every character. She truly amazes me with her writing style and I cannot wait to read more from this wonderful woman. I feel that every time I open a P.C. Cast books I am a child on Christmas morning waiting to tear through my new present. This is what makes her an amazing author and I just wanted to say thank you P.C. for making my imagination soar to new heights!

And I apologize for the lapse in blogging but I burnt my hand terribly at work using hot sugar/caramel, an I've just today been cleared to use my hand again. But in lighter news this week I'm reading Burned (*squeals* with excitement) by P. C. Cast + Kristin Cast. This is I think the seventh book in The House Of Night series and I have been impatiently waiting for it. I am currently devouring it totally in my invalid state and I have to graciously thank my sister Rachel over @ The Book Wars for buying it for my birthday! But enough blah, blah, blah I know y'all wanna just get to the teaser so here it is:

This was such a good book. It was heartwarming in a weird way if that makes any sense? The author brings together a sense of found family and a view on death that is so refreshing. She takes hard topics and flips them inside out in a way that will make you continue to read and build an attachment with each character. I really was impressed especially since this is the authors first novel. What a creative imagination and so much talent. Normally I'm not just a straight fiction fan but this book had the essence of fairytale qualities that kept me enamored. And the characters where to begin? You love them and hate them as if they were family. These are people you can relate to set in rural America just trying to live life (or die peacefully). I found that this novel felt like coming home and getting a big Truly sized hug! After finishing the book all cozy in my snuggie (hehe) I smiled and was just perfectly relaxed and happy. And all I have to say is do you like to smile, do you need a feel good moment because this book is just that! This Was Such A Good Book!

I love Robin Maxwell's books and this one was no exception. She has a knack for piecing together historical facts and fabulous fiction. Although this book wasn't my favorite (that would be Signora da Vinci) I still commend the author for writing about such a little known time period in Elizabeth I reign. I've always thought this time period to be overshadowed and really enjoyed Robin bringing it back into the light. Grace was a fascinating character and I loved the way she and Elizabeth butted heads. Also Essex although sickly, and winy was one of my most notable characters. But it seemed to me as is the author's writing style changed a little in this novel. It was more jumpy and I can see with it being more of a war based fiction (and also following the three main characters). But I love her other novels where you can really dig your heels in and get involved with the characters. In The Wild Irish there was soo many clans and courtiers and soldiers I feel as if I need to re-read the book (which isn't a bad thing) to grasp all the events that had occurred. I did however enjoy learning more about the Irish/English conflict and found it interesting to see both sides of the story. So in my opinion this was a good book with a great plot but if your looking for this authors best I would try one of her other novels (much praise for Signora da Vinci).

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. This week I'm reading The Wild Irish by Robin Maxwell. I really enjoy Maxwell's books and her prospective into history. This novel is the story of the Irish-English conflict and is told from many different perspectives (which is a little different from her usual novels). So far I'm intrigued and can't wait to see how the lives of the characters pan out. But for now here is my teaser for the week:

Once again P.C. Cast captures my imagination. I was a little leery at first upon purchasing this book, But I was just too darn curious and I'm glad I was! Cast's mixture of mythology, romance and fantasy to create her own world of Parthalon. Filled with centaurs, vampire like winged creatures, and medieval-esque humans you'll be captivated from the first chapter. And unlike her HoN series Parthalon appeals to not only YA but everyone. The language and actions weren't pure teen (which was my only complaint with House of Night) here I could really see people of all ages delighted. Being a huge mythological fan I loved the influences to Greek, Roman, and Saxon legends and tales. And the characters were so relatable even with their medieval flair. And my favorite part was that Cast has created her own world, her own myth. A place I could travel to in my imagination. I saw and felt the world of Parthalon and I can't wait to return in Brighid's quest. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a fantasy they can really get sucked in to. I myself could not put this book down and cannot wait till my weekend to go purchase the second in the series!

Stunning and beautifully written I was truly captivated from page one. The characters are so vivid and ripe with emotion that you can't help but fall in love with Eliza and Will. And the backdrop of 1798 Ireland during their traumatic overthrow of the English lights the fire propelling the whole story. In fact the book reminded me a lot of Romeo & Juliet at times with the lovers turmoil filled lives and separate organizations beckoning their duty. I really got into this book and only had one problem with the entire novel......it ended so abruptly! I wanted more what happens now to Will and Eliza, how will Anna and Caro fare against all the odds. Supposedly Anna's story will continue but I really would have liked to see a complete end for our 2 main characters Will and Eliza. There just wasn't enough of an end to satisfy my curiosity and I can't stand to be left without closure. (I know I'm such a girl) However; the history is phenomenal (not many books take on this particular time in history)and the romance superb if your into hit/fic/romance you'll really love this book.

Before I start take this novel for what it is "a zombie parody on Queen Victoria's reign". That being said I do have a thing for parody's especially paranormal parodies! And I really wanted to get into this novel because I'm such a history buff (and I make desserts for a restaurant called Victoria & Albert's) but it was very hard to get into. The action was what I expected gory, at times gross, and brutal. However; I was missing out on a lot of the plot and character development. They all seem so flat i.e I'm in love so I'm going to become the greatest Demon hunter and get my man. And it was written so short, the book felt rushed at points. Even through the one dimensional plot and characters there was some laughter; I found Perkins to be like Igor from "Young Frankenstein" but with zombie hunger. He was truly a delightful giggle. And the minuscule interwoven history that was in the novel wasn't so bad; but it certainly wasn't a focal point. I kind of wish they had been able to bring out more character detail and historical elements than focus on gore. But that being said the gore was done well and Victoria's love for Albert really did triumph all in life as it does in the novel. At the end of the day I liked this book as a quick, fun read but wouldn't put the novel to much more than simple pleasure read. And the cover is great (if you haven't noticed it's a parody on a real portrait of Victoria). If your a zombie/demon/succubus/anything else demonic you might really get into the book. But it won't be hitting my favorites list anytime soon!

This book took a lot of getting into! And to be honest I probably wouldn't have purchased the book had it not been for the little blurb about it being a "Medieval Mystery". That being said once I got through the confusion of the first couple of chapters I became intrigued! Not only is it hard to find a goood medieval novel but even rarer a mystery-medieval novel. But here were my two main problems: 1. The book switches points of view rapidly and for awhile I had no idea who was speaking or thinking these thoughts (which I guess adds to the clue-like game of who-dunnit) and 2. There were soooo many characters it took half the book to get them all straight and new ones kept being introduced. I know it's a crime scene and all but even CSI slows down once in awhile to let the folks at home catch up!

That being said after I finally got the characters and perspectives down the book became really good. It held my attention and actually had me guessing (of course I never guessed the real murderer, I would make a lousy investigator!) But all in all I enjoyed the novel after working through the kinks. However; I don't recommend it to those of you who are impatient because it took me half the book to finally figure out all the characters. But if your up for the challenge and love you some Medieval Mystery I say try this one out!

What a thrill ride of a novel! And I have to admit at first I was skeptical because a co-worker had given me the book to read. The plot is outstanding with twists and turns all along the way. I love the two villains who are so intricately written. And viewing the perspective of both good and evil gives the reader insight into some pretty complicated minds. The cat and mouse game between both detective and thief is probably one of the best I've read of in awhile. I truly enjoyed this book and will be checking out further novels by this author. I have to give a massive thanks to Christine for letting me borrow this book! Also for bloggers if your looking for a vivid mystery with a little history thrown in check this one out of your nearest library. It really was a phenomenal roller coaster book filled with intrigue and suspense!

Happy April Fools Day everyone! And it's a new month (and my birthday month yay!) which means a new amazing author to introduce! This month I chose Steve Berry, an author who writes thrilling mysteries with historical and biblical tie-ins. But before I praise his work here's a little bio on him:

I truly enjoy his books; a lot of them are of the cannot-put-down variety. And the best part I've not read a book by him yet that disappoints (and I've only have 2 more to read that are published). So yay I'm a little more than a quarter of the way through my hundred book challenge! This really excites me because it's my first challenge on my pretty new-ish blog. Jane Parker-Boleyn is a fascinating character in Tudor-esque England and very controversial as well. Most books paint her as an evil woman focusing on her testimony against her husband George Boleyn and sister-in-law Queen Anne Boleyn. However; few go into details of her life which catapulted her to this fate. Purdy's version of her life delves into all that makes her to become the immortalized, jealous wife!

I was thrilled when I heard about this novel finally someone is trying to set the record straight about Jane Parker. She was driven to madness by her uncle,her husband and the court itself. She was outcasted from the beginning and treated like a third wheel. In this book she is shown for who I to believe she truly is.....someone looking through a window at life passing them by! Purdy does an amazing job capturing Parker's torment and anguish over not being one of the "popular" kids so to speak. An she shows us the depth of Jane's madness as it seeps in through 5 wives of Henry VII. You begin to understand how someone could go insane from the pressures on Jane's shoulders and you even pity the poor woman hopelessly in love with a husband who doesn't even care if she exists!

I loved this book and could not put it down once I started! Every line is suspenseful and foreboding to the later events of the book. And although it tells the tale through 5 of Henry's wives it doesn't seem rushed or hurried along. I felt drawn to Janes character wanting to fight for her, wanting to comfort the character as if she were my own sister! The author does a beautiful job of capturing a more realistic version of Jane Parker and for anyone who thought she got the wrong end of the stick this novel will cast some light on a woman only deemed a liar and a husband -killler!

Hilarious, gory, and action packed this is definitely not your average Pride And Prejudice sequel. I found the book charmingly amusing although if your a die-hard Jane Austen fan this one may not be for you. Although the characters are still present they hardly relate to the original counterparts. And I know the author didn't have a prequel to work from as he did in his first novel using Pride And Prejudice as the backbone for P&P&Z; however, I expected this novel to be just as great. The gore doesn't disappoint though and it still makes me giggle to think of Elizabeth as a ninja-like, sword wielding zombie killer. ( I kinda pictured Elizabeth as a 19th century Buffy the Vampire er...Zombie slayer) And I also enjoyed the pictures in the book that add to the amusement factor( if you can't picture whats occuring these will definitely give you a hilarious visual).But I really think Hockensmith's first take on Zombies in the 19th century was by far the better novel. P&P&Z imitated the original Austen writings even with the addition of zombies. So if your looking for quick, fun read definitely check out this spin-off but I suggest not trying to compare it to the original classic!

This is the third installment to Lathans Darcy Trilogy. And don't worry if you haven't read up to this point (although I recommend you do) because Dr. George Darcy gives a full summary of whats happened thus far at the beginning of the novel. Once again we find our lovers in the throws of what else but love. However; I think this novel may be my favorite so far because it shows so much more than their love.

My Dearest Mr. Darcy is packed with love, histories behind beloved characters and even some scandals to boot. I couldn't help but once again fall right back into Pemberly and become part of the family once more. I believe its the authors writing style but you feel a sense of belonging to the Darcy's world that I haven't experienced in other Pride & Prejudice sequels. And once again I give a great deal of credit to the strong characters who by themselves could stand alone and are furthermore enhanced through Lathans third book. I truly relished the emergence of George as a main character he adds life and knowledge to the novel. Not to mention he's a little bit of a comedian and I couldn't help but smile if he were on the page I was reading. Confession time: I think although I love Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam; George is my new favorite and I wish he were my uncle!

I've enjoyed my time with the Darcy's through the authors eyes immensely. It seems sad to know I have to wait for the next book to be released. This trilogy made me remember the first time I read Pride and Prejudice and renewed my love for all things Darcy. And I really enjoyed the way the author keeps the books authentic and realistic. She truly does a magnificent job capturing Austen's beloved characters and I can't wait to read what's next for my favorite couple!

Movie You've Got To Check Out: Alice In Wonderland

So in case you've been living under a rock for the past couple of months you've probably seen the trailer for Disney Alice In Wonderland. But if you have fallen in a rabbit hole you can check out the trailer here! I just saw the movie tonight and it was AMAZING!

And I know I'm not the most impartial person (as I work for Disney) but Tim Burton really hit a home run with this movie. Alice follows the style of the classic by Lewis Carroll but tells it's own story in a sequel form. I must admit I was a little skeptical going to see the movie at first, since I didn't like Burton's remake of Willy Wonka but I was pleasantly pleased with what he's done with Alice! Breathtaking and stunning Alice is a must see movie. My view on the movie is go see it or "off with your head"! Let me know if you've seen the movie and your thoughts on the new Alice!

When I received the offer to review this book I was ecstatic for two reasons. One Alice In Wonderland is one of my all time favorite books. Number two with the movie coming out I figured what a great companion it would make!

The book itself takes the complex world Alice has fallen into and dissects the philosophy behind all the curious things that are occurring. At times the book was a little dry but it got me to question Carroll's writing. (As most of you I assumed he was on some good drugs or something) But after reading the philosophy (possibly) behind the novel I'm amazed at the connotations placed throughout the original! Afterwards I just had to pick up my copy of Alice and reread with a new insight I didn't have before. It was a real eyeopener and I never would have realized this fairytale could deal with so many of life's issues! I went to see the movie today (more on that later) and once again felt I had a better understanding of the world of Wonderland.

Overall I really enjoyed this book it's one that will make you think definitely! The book itself can drag at points which is why I suggest a little older audience. But if your a scholar or just curious, and curiouser about Ms. Alice definitely give this book a try!

Hey everyone sorry for being MIA this week! I' ve been in and out of the doctors office and hospital. Good News! I'm okay just a very bad ear infection( causing vertigo and loss of sight). So cute, fun and heartwarming to see the Darcy's love for each other grow exponentially! In Lathans second book the Darcy's journey away from Pemberly to Darcy House their London Home where love, conflict, and chaos ensues. I love getting to know the Darcy's through the authors writings. It seems with each book they become a more cherished old friend.

I was happy to see the original and some of the old characters resurface. (As we all know and love Lady Caroline De Bourgh haha). But the real gems were getting to know Lady Anne (Catherine's ill daughter), Mary, Georgiana and Lydia's ex-right hand Kitty a little better. And of course meeting Raja and Fitzwilliams Uncle George was a delightful humorous episode in itself. You can't help but to fall in love with these characters all over again.

And once again I was flabbergasted as Sharon continually mixes the classic P&P, the 2005 movie, and historical significance into a novel that the reader can relate to today. Its seems to me I'm addicted to this series and the only prescription is ......more Darcy's.

I've just recently discovered Sharon Lathan's Darcy Trilogy after winning the books over on Lucy's blog Enchanted By Josephine. And I have to say I'm hooked but before I go on and on let me give you a little author bio first:

Sharon Lathan is a native Californian currently residing amid corn, cotton, and cows in the sunny San Joaquin Valley. She divides her time as homemaker nurturing a husband and two children, plus the cat, dog, and fish; while also working as a Registered Nurse in a Neonatal ICU. Somewhere in there she finds time to write!

I've read her first two books thus far and am currently diving through the pages of My Dearest Mr. Darcy. I love the way she writes putting you in the story fully immersed in all things Darcy. Also she stick close to the original Pride And Prejudice which really struck a cord with me as it is one of or maybe my favorite book (shhhh! don't tell my bookshelf) of all time. In my personal opinion I think Lathans Darcy trilogy is one of the best sequels or spinoffs of P&P I've read to date. And I'm so excited because the trilogy will continue with Romancing Mr. Darcy, it will be released on October 1, 2010. If your still not fully convinced check out my reviews! After finishing this book I had to sit down and truly contemplate my thoughts pertaining to this novel. The book itself is a lot to process so I wanted to really get my review right!

First I'll say I loved the cover. It completely fits the book with the Spanish rose and the silhouette woman keeping a secret! Now I enjoyed the story aspect of the book itself which is summarized in the above quotations. However; I was quite a bit overwhelmed by the sexual promiscuity of the lead characters. And I know the author herself warns the reader to "Open your mind and enjoy" (and I am by no means opposed to certain intimate writings ) but there was a bit too much erotic affairs for me to enjoy the story itself. I love romance but this one went a little beyond for me it is a very adult novel! I really wished the story pertaining to Caroline's powers, lineage and scrutiny were what I was able to focus on because it is a beautiful story in itself. I felt this is when she was a relate-able character and this is why I wanted to continue reading to find out her fate! The end of the novel focused more on these points and really captured me to continue in suspense.

This is an adult novel by all means. It is erotic, sensual, and you will blush quite a bit I must say. But I enjoyed the story behind the crazy rampant passion and that's what endeared me to the book. I will say this book is not for everyone and most people will not make it past the first intimate scene. But if you can see through the sex there is a story there to be told!

I really enjoyed O'Shaughnessey as a light, whimsical read. The author truly has a knack for storytelling (I think he himself is a Shenache) and really paints the picture of a modern fairytale. Set in rural Ireland far away from the TV, Radio, and distracting Video Games, our heroine Margaret has no choice but to listen to the stories and take in her surroundings. And these stories are what breathe life into the fairytale (or is it just the faerie world).

This book has all the components of what make a story great and I was intrigued almost immediately by the beautiful cover. Their is the paranormal element of faeries, leprechauns, nymphs and much more which in itself is exciting! But also there is the thought of just believing in something makes it real and I really like that! Also for those of you still not convinced there is an amazing twist to the story at the end (that brings the novel full circle) which I was surprised and delighted in!

I think this is a perfect book for just about everyone adults and kids alike. And it is so perfectly timed as St. Patrticks Day and all things Irish are right around the corner! Hey you might even see your very own leprechaun if....you believe!

First and foremost I must let all know this series is for mature minds!

That being said I loved every minute of it. I know there have been numerous sequels for Pride And Prejudice over the years but these captured how I envisioned Lizzy and Williams future. Lathan not only researched the original but she also studied her history of England at this time. I truly enjoyed the scenery that portrays Georgian England that was thoughtfully crafted through careful research. Also I was fascinated as the author wove the 2005 movie with the original novel to create the picture of the Darcy's future. (And I too adored the 2005 movie Keira Knightley was amazing!!!)

But what strikes a cord most with me is the love the couple shares throughout the book. I actually blushed at some of the intimate scenes! I felt like I was in the room sharing their experiences (at times it was a little X rated but you know what I can't really complain!). The characters are the same ones from before only a little more grown up now with a little more knowledge. You will share their triumphs and feel their heartbreak at times. I truly think the characters are so strongly impressioned from the original that this alone draws me further into the book.

In the end I loved this novel! It was exactly what I've been looking for in my month of LOVE. Although flushed scarlet at times by the characters scandalous intimacies I have to say I was enthralled completely. However; this is not a book to speed read all in one sitting. So if your interested sit back, relax, and enjoy everlasting love leisurely as it is a little overwhelming at times!

Pastries and Peter Pan

I'm not one to comment on my daily life to much but this weekend was just tooo amazing not to share. Plus it's book related sorta?

As you know I work in a bakeshop and We create some pretty crazy stuff and it's ALL edible. But this week the bakeshop produced a Neverland baby shower cake and accompanying desserts and I just had to show you guys all our hard work! But before I do a lil' history on the novel and play featuring Peter Pan:

Peter Pan is a novel and play written by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie(1860–1937), and first presented on the stage in 1904. In 1911, Barrie novelized the play into a book, Peter Pan and Wendy. It is a story of a mischievous little boy who can't grow up.

And without further adieu the pics of the bakeshops hard work. First we have the amazing cake that's all edible. (And this cake is huge guys it took 5 people to lift it)! Next I put a closeup view of the cake with Peter on it (and hes made out of white chocolate and edible paint)!

And finally the accompanying pre-plated desserts which feature Hooks pirate ship made from white chocolate!
I really hope everyone enjoys a little insight into my daily life. Yet more than that I hope I get at least a few mouths to water just a bit at the lovely pastries our bakeshop can put out!

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen tells us the heart-warming story of getting the man of your dreams – and all the troubles that are connected with it. Obviously I'm not going to summarize the entire book as just about everyone in their lifetime has heard at the very least tidbits of the book. However; since this is my favorite classical author I would like to put my two-cents in. I love this book sincerely and have since high school. It has been almost 200 years since the book was first published, yet the novel has an easy relevance and connection to the present. Austen truly has an art for writing (unlike most classical writers) the book is easily comprehended and even relatable.

As for the characters, they themselves are timeless. What woman does not search for her own Mr. Darcy or aspire to be a spitfire like Elizabeth. We all have that annoying sibling (Lydia) that is overbearing, and uncontrollable. Elizabeths mother, father, cousins etc. all such memorable and meaningful parts of the story that create and unravel it as we proceed through the novel.

I honestly think everyone should read Jane Austen's works whether it be Pride And Prejudice or another. I truly believe that she defines a classic novel of a beautifully expressed piece of literature which will stand the tests of time. But to be completely truthful I think with age comes appreciation in this novel. As I said I fell in Love in high school and have come to fully appreciate the book now as an adult. So I would recommend this book from late teens through adults and trust me this book is well worth every praise it's received!!!

A Simple Confession

I have a confession to make........ I am falling in love all over again with all things concerning Pride and Prejudice. I was nuts about this novel in high school and have always considered Jane Austen an author way before her time (in regards to writing style). But after just finishing Pride and Prejudice as an Adult (finally haha) I can finally appreciate it as the classic piece of literature it was written to be. I just can't get enough and I apologize in advance as I'll be reviewing quite a bit of Darcy-esque literature for those of you who don't love it (oh come on who doesn't love one of the greatest love stories of all time)! Currently I'm so involved in the Darcy Trilogy I won in a contest from Lucy over at Enchanted by Josephine. (honestly Lucy I can't profess my thanks enough) I just can't wait to find out whats next for the Darcy's and I hope you guys all enjoy my tour through the Georgian Era of England in my reviews and rantings.

This book fell a little short for me to be completely honest. After reading some of Berry's latter novels I was a little dissapointed. It reminded me a lot of an M. Night Shyamalan movie meaning The Sixth Sense was astounding yet The Village not so much! The main characters Paul and Rachel are endearing with their rocky romance, and I loved the competing art collectors. But all the action in the novel led me in suspense to a rather surprising let down.

I have to give it to the author though the chase leading up to the Amber Room was enthralling! If only the twist at the end had been different I would truly have loved this book as I have the preious I've reviewed. When all is said and done I liked the book but would defiinetly recommend reading one of the novels by Steve Berry I had prviously reviewed! I still have a few more to go by the same author and I'm hoping they redeem my love for his works!

Honestly I don't want to summarize any of this book because the authors writing already says it all. This is so far my favorite Robin Maxwell book I've read to date. I love fearless Caterina, questioning Leonardo, passionate Lorenzo, faithful Francesco, even Pierro (whom we're not supposed to like). All of these characters are soooo well written that you can't put the book down. You really want to know them and their story. The settings for the backdrop of the story are so vivid I thought I was in Florence and Vinci. But most of all theirs Caterina/Cato! She is the most courageous woman I've ever come to know through literature. Her strength and passion made me want to be a better person. Her life in Maxwell's eyes is an astounding trip of ups and downfalls.

As I said before I don't want to summarize or give anything away because this is a book I think everyone would want to read! Robin Maxwell has always been a favorite of mine but this novel of hers really hits a home run for historical fiction. If your interested in her work be sure to pick up Signora da Vinci and I promise you won't be disappointed!

So this is Michelle Moran's second novel of the doomed Egyptian family. Nefertari is the niece of The Heretic Queen Nefertiti. After her families fall from grace Nefertari must fight not only for her place at court but also for her life. Ther is always danger in a royal court but when everyone thinks your akhu (family history) has bad blood in it what mor can you do?

Unfortunately it is almost the same story as Moran's first novel and Nefertiti's rise to power. And I know ancient Egypt had many similarities but after being so enthralled in her first novel I wanted her second to surpass my expectations. Unfortunately it fell a little short of meeting them instead. The people and times may have changed yet the plot priomarily remains the same. The fighting wives scenario seems overplaye to me since it was the focus of the first book. However; there is one shining star I loved that everyone had a hidden double agenda so to speak and some chapters will take your breath away with it's corruptedness.

Overall I liked the book, not loved but liked. I really loved Nefertiti and hope that Moran makes a comeback with Cleopatras Daughter (her third book). If your going to pick up a Moran book definetly go for Nefertiti first. The Heretic Queen isn't a bad read but maybe don't read the two so closely together as I did (because then perhaps you won't nit-pick everything). I really enjoy the author's writing style though and look forward to her next enticing novel. After all Egyptians never really die!

"Stressed in Scottsdale" is a comedy about one woman's life spiraling out of control into a stress-infused free fall. Poor Jean tries to take care of everyone elses needs in between doctors appointments and her husbands new political campaign for a greener Arizona. Her balancing juggle act may never end even when she has a mini stroke.

It made me laugh from start to finish. You can easily relate to Jean if you are in college or post-college. I see my stress through her and think "thank god that's not me!" Jean is relateable as opposed to her kooky friends and children. But they make life all the more interesting. I really enjoyed the flow of the book but I thought the ending was rather abrupt it seemed unfinished. Yes, the day is saved time to relax but there's got to be something else just around the corner that could have been alluded to! The authors sarcasm was refreshing it's nice to hear a woman author who's not afraid to put it out there. I really enjoyed the little stress tips at the beginning of each chapter (they were so amusing).

I really loved this book as a short read, but sad to say it wasn't a "you can't put this down" kind of book. I think all in all the book was a great comedic read but not a life changing experience. If you've need a good laugh and maybe some perspective on your own stress level pick up "Stressed in Scottsdale".

Stephanie and Cotton (I still don't know how he got his name?) are on a journey to find the Templar's Great Devise. The Templar's are a secret order sworn to protect Christianity. And the Great Devise was a treasure and possible exposure of Christianity that was secreted away during 1308 from the French Royal family. Lost since that time our two heroes must meet friends, family and foes to help them on their quest; and find the Great Devise before it falls into the wrong hands.
The characters are so well written showing only glimmers of their true selves and past as they confront obstacles which leads to more intrigue. The setting all factual is so vivid in description you feel as if your in Europe fighting right along our protagonists. Fear, suspense and intrigue will grip you as you read on to discover the treasure.
If you loved the "Da Vinci Code" just wait till you get your hands on this read. I could not put this book down!!! I read this one in two days (which is why I haven't been able to post). I love that the author only fictionalizes the basic storyline. All places, and historical reference is true. (There were Knights Templar and the french king did try to retrieve their treasure. ) So to add just a little more suspense there is a possibility that this story is possible (hehe). Robin Maxwell grew up in New Jersey, graduated from Tufts University School of Occupational Therapy, and practiced in that field for several years before moving to Hollywood to become a parrot tamer, casting director and finally a screenwriter. Working for the major studios and networks she wrote comedy, drama and even feature animation for Disney. Her credits include "Passions," a CBS movie of the week, starring Joanne Woodward.

But somewhere along the line, the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and women "ahead of their time," became Maxwell's private obsession. My Thoughts: Robin Maxwell has such an inspiring voice through her literature. I love the way she writes as though she has put herself in the characters shoes in that time period. She seems to transport herself easily through time and space in her novels. I've sincerely loved every book I've read by her to this date. (mark it down 2/1/2010) Which isn't always the case with authors writing numerous novels. If you haven't already please try to get your hands on one of her books. I think you'll really enjoy her view into history. And this is why I have chosen her as my first "Author of the Month".

Robin Maxwell has done it again (at least for me!!). In this novel we are taken to a civil war in England; Lancaster vs. York. Nell Caxton a daughter of a bookseller (to the royal family) carefully narrates us from the Tower cell of Queen Elizabeth of York back in time. King Edward is dead and the young prince Edward is now King. However; warring uncles try to seize the crown and a renegade usurper appears seemingly out of nowhere. England is in turmoil and it's up to Nell to find all the solutions using all her intellect, and connections to find and free the true royal family at last! (I won't give away anymore because it might spoil the book)

"To the Tower Born" like Robin Maxwell's previous novels I've reviewed did not disappoint. Once again I am lost in another time period. I am taken into the confidence of a young future Queen of England and her best friend Nell. I love the "what if?" in this story. It makes you wonder, what happened to these princes? Why has one family torn itself into a million pieces? Nell is a wonderful character (and actually historically true) full of courage and cunning. She keeps you grounded and ever-questioning. Bessie her other half is the exact opposite (but you know what they say about opposites) a spitfire true to her emotions at all cost. The people places and action of this book will keep you on the edge of your seat!

The novel flows easily and was a short read for me. (A very relaxing day-off-work piece.) I did want more to this novel wishing their was a sequel ( like her Elizabeth novels) but maybe it will come in time. If you have time and are looking to get into hit/fic of just love it like I do, definitely check out this book.

Atonement: Book vs. Movie

So I just finished watching the movie version of "Atonement". It stayed pretty true to the book. Keira Knightly gives an award worthy performance as Cecilia Tallis and really does exemplify her book persona. Both girls that play Briony a far more endearing than her book version. And James McAvoy as Robbie is simply heart-wrenching. This movie unlike the book actually brought a tear to my eye. Also, as I predicted in my review the movie helped speed along the events that unfold in the book. And I like that the war scenes are in a little more depth than the book portrays them. I really enjoyed the directors view on the book (he even added a bit more life to the novel). All in all I have to say the movie takes this one! You can check out the trailor here if your interested. To preface : I really wanted to like this book! Unfortunately I wasn't as thrilled as the reviews put it in the jacket.

The story is told primarily through the eyes of three people Briony, her sister Cecilia, and Robbie Turner (their fathers ward/gardener). And the novel is broken up into three parts before the crime, the war, and the return home. Basically Briony catches a lovers tryst between her sister and Robbie. With her wild childish imagination she creates a crime and a monster (in Robbie) so unspeakable. The she relates this to the parents who promptly separate the too through some drastic manners. The story goes on to show how each live their lives separated by a child's mischievous lie. And how they are to reunite if only the truth will be revealed.

Like I said I really wanted to like this book. However; the first chapter is soooo long-winded. It is very hard to get through and I had to put the book down a couple of times because I couldn't keep reading. Briony comes off as a selfish attention-seeking brat which is kind of annoying at the beginning. And you feel so sad for Cecilia and Robbie, you just wish the lies had never happened. But the book finally picks up during part two. The war kind of "kicks the author in the butt" and hurries things along. Also the authors writing style can be confusing from time to time. He jumps from places and time quite quickly (although he drags on in between). And at some points I didn't know which characters mind I was in. For instance I read an entire page until Brionys name finally appeared ( I thought Cecilia was recounting her day oops).

But I loved the plot and really wished the author had put as much effort into the first part as he did the last two. I'm thinking the movie version might actually be better (I know, I know scandalous to say). But it might help speed up events in the first half and keep the reader/watchers interest. I'm actually going to rent the movie tomorrow night so I'll put up a post about my thoughts on book vs. movie probably later tomorrow.

What an imaginative novel. Once again Maxwell astounds me; so far I loved all her books I've read by her and can't wait to get to the next in my pile of "to be read". History comes alive in this woman's pen! However; I have to say the first two books I've reviewed by her were a little more interesting to me.

The Queen's Bastard is the story of runaway love. Queen Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley her Horse master have long been linked in history. (Her advisers even tried to assassinate him for his influence over the Queen.) But this story is the what if? What if the Queen and Dudley had an illegitimate son? And his story was told in this novel? See life through the eyes of Arthur Dudley. See how he grows unknowing of his true family and what happens when he discovers the truth!

A compelling piece of historical fiction. Although it is true that there was a man named Arthur Dudley there not much record of him throughout history. And this is the reason I rated this novel thus so. I love the what-if but at some points I thought it a little to far-fetched. I don't know how a Queen would react to the scandal as Elizabeth did in the novel. However; it is beautifully written and a delightful read none-the-less. If your a hit/fic fan check out Robin Maxwell's books she really has a knack for putting you into history.

Virgin is a wickedly imagined piece for author Robin Maxwell. I like the way she captivates the readers imagination with her storytelling. She takes historical fact and intricately winds it through her novels.
Elizabeth is compelling in this novel a castoff, an innocent child, a pawn, and a whore. She plays so many roles but with each you still want to stand up for her. And that's the allure people had for her during her time. This is what her court was about and how she began to build support. Her scandal, and downfalls are what make her a queen and such an interesting character.Also I love the way the author writes about her characters younger years (as in same with the case of Mademoiselle Boleyn). This is a topic not to stretched upon; and I love her embellishments to the story (although most are historical fact ).
All in all, I have to say this book was beautifully written. It's a short, complex novel of Elizabeth before she became queen. The scandals caused by her and Thomas Seymour will tug at your heartstrings because we all know how we felt about our first loves (or lusts). Another brilliant novel by Robin Maxwell, soon I hope to have read them all. And I think I may have found my first author of the month.

This was an awesome book. A note to readers before I begin : This book does start out really slow but definitely picks up fast. The way Buckley infuses the turmoil of Queen Elizabeth's early reign and a fictitious mystery is seamless. The drama unfolds in every turn of the page. This was one of my Tuesday Teaser books and the intrigue did not let me down.

Ursula Blanchard the main character is a strong, witty female heroine who is trying to find justice amidst gossip, murder, and betrayal. You feel her pain as she's a recent widower (in a time where women were just an accompaniment to their men) trying to make her way in a torn apart kingdom and support her daughter. She finds herself doing very dangerous jobs, sometimes risking her own person for those she's sworn loyalty to. A very relatable figure, Ursula has many depths to her character and her loyalty, persistence, and sense of self-perseverance endear Ursula to the reader.

Like I said before the novel starts off very slow. I actually thought at first I wouldn't like this book, however; when I did my Teaser Tuesday I was soo intrigued I decided to read on. And I'm sooooo glad I did. Buckley's suspenseful writing makes me want to run out and purchase the next book in this series. I NEED to know what happens next in the twisted web Ursula has woven. If your looking for a Elizabethan suspense novel I suggest you pick this one up since its the first in this series. Just make sure your ready to get through the first 5 chapters (each chapter is not that long) which are slow.

Extremely exciting and suspenseful, Barry takes the reader on a wild ride through post-communist Russia. You feel as if your in the action (almost like watching an action move in surround sound on a big screen in HD) avoiding bullets looking for the long lost tsar. This is a truly tantalizing twist on the classic story of the fall of the Tsar's.
It's fun trying to put the mystery together along with Miles and Akilina. Subtle clues are expertly placed throughout the book to keep the reader constantly guessing, a truly engrossing puzzle. Also the way the book reads is not all action and suspense you begin to feel for these characters. When they hit a dead end (or sometimes just the dead) you want to let them know that they'll make it through, they will find the answers.
The other interesting aspect of the book is that the characters are living out Rasputins' prophecy word for word. For example The Raven (Miles) and the Eagle (Akilina) are the only ones who can find and save Russia. The author does bring it to attention a few times. However; if your a history junkie like myself you'll see the prophecy being played out before its later reiterated for you. I love the real historical events that are twisted through this plot.
I would really recommend this book to my fellow historical-fiction fanatics. I'm actually waiting to receive more of Steve Barrys' collection of historical/mystery novels including two that just came out in stores. Yay, I love when I find a new series or collection I enjoy don't you?
